Cables, along with chargers, are among the most important accessories for mobile phones. When choosing a cable for your phone, it is important to consider several aspects, primarily the type of cable and connector you need, as well as the functions it should fulfill. For some people, the material from which the cable is made may also be a deciding factor. If your cables often break or tangle, it is definitely better to choose more durable and stronger types of mobile cables.
What types of cables do we know?
Data (charging) cables – These are the most common and widely used type of cables. Data cables are used to transfer data and information between two devices, most often between a computer and a mobile phone. Data cables are also referred to as charging cables because they are intended for regular charging of mobile devices.
Audio cables – These are used to transmit high-quality sound. The most commonly used is the audio cable with a Jack connector, which is available on most mobile devices.
Video cables – These are intended for connecting a mobile phone to another device to transmit a video signal. Most often, a phone can be connected via cable to a monitor, TV, or projector. Commonly used video cables include HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA, or DVI.
Adapters and converters – These are cables that can change one type of connector into another, thereby connecting two devices that do not have compatible interfaces. The most commonly used are USB adapters for connecting different types of USB interfaces (for example, between MicroUSB and USB-C). It is also very common to use adapters with a 3.5 mm audio Jack connector. These adapters are primarily used by owners of newer smartphones that no longer have a Jack connector.
What type of connector can you choose when buying a cable?
MicroUSB cables – Typical for older smartphone models, this type of connector is the most widespread. The disadvantage is slower charging compared to other types of connectors.
USB-C cables – The latest technology gradually replacing MicroUSB connectors. The advantages of USB-C cables are faster charging capability and a reversible connector, so you don’t have to worry about inserting it the wrong way.
Lightning cables – Available only for Apple devices, specifically from the iPhone 5 onwards.
30-pin cables – An older type of connector for Apple devices. This connector was used in the iPhone 3GS/4/4s and older iPad models.
MiniUSB cables – An older type of USB connector, which is now rarely seen and not found in new devices at all.
What materials are cables made from?
Data, or charging cables, are available in various designs depending on the material used and also in different lengths. Just choose the one whose properties suit you best.
PVC-coated cables – These are commonly used cables included in the packaging of a new mobile phone. Their disadvantage is the tendency to tangle, making them difficult to untangle and prone to breaking.
Nylon-braided cables – Textile braiding prevents knots in cables, protecting them from unnecessary breakage.
Highly durable Kevlar cables – Among the most durable cables is the Halo Back cable, made from a strong weave reinforced with Kevlar fiber. Kevlar fiber is also used in bulletproof vests. The disadvantage is that this type of cable is only available with a Lightning connector for Apple devices.
Special cable functions
Some cables may have additional functions besides the basic functions of data transfer or charging.
Magnetic cables – These are practical cables with a magnetic tip. If you accidentally pull on the cable while charging, you don’t have to worry about your phone falling. The magnetic tip disconnects and remains in the connector.
Universal cables – Especially useful if you have multiple devices with different types of connectors. Universal cables can charge several devices simultaneously, and the advantage is that you don’t need to carry a different cable for each device.
