Wi-Fi – it is important that the Wi-Fi signal is stable and the connection is fast.

Bluetooth – the downside is a shorter range compared to other protocols.

ZigBee – individual devices connect to each other and communicate with the central unit by passing the signal from one device to another until it reaches the hub.

Z-Wave – works on a similar principle as ZigBee. It has a high range. Each country uses a different frequency value.

IFTTT – If This Then That. A free app that can connect devices with different communication protocols. You can set functions that are executed when a certain trigger is activated.
