When it comes to reading, people fall into two groups – those who prefer traditional books, and the more modern readers who don’t mind reading with the help of an e-book reader. Although a reader cannot replace the feeling of holding a classic hardcover book, it has several advantages that make it worth considering.

E-book readers operate on the principle of electronic ink (E-Ink). This distinguishes them from regular tablets with color displays. E-Ink is easier on the eyes, and the text on the screen looks very similar to that in a printed book. The display is clearly visible even in sunlight, and if the reader has a backlit screen, you can enjoy reading even in a dark room.

The biggest advantage of e-book readers is the ability to store dozens or even hundreds of titles in one device. You don’t need to carry heavy books, which is especially appreciated when traveling. You can simply download books to the reader, where you can easily browse and read them.

Lightweight and easy to carry;
Comfortable to hold and minimal eye strain;
Long battery life – even several weeks;
Text reads just as well as in a printed book;
Support for multiple e-book formats;
E-books are cheaper than printed books;

Disadvantages of E-Book Readers:

Higher initial investment to purchase the device;
Possibility of damage or screen breakage;
Some devices are available only in a foreign language;

How to Choose an E-Book Reader

Like all electronic devices, e-book readers can be evaluated using several important parameters:

1. Display

The size is given in inches, just like tablets and mobile phones. Readers are most commonly available in sizes from 5 to 8 inches. Resolution is also important: the higher it is, the sharper the text will appear. The ideal resolution is 1448 × 1072 pixels. Cheaper devices may have lower resolution. Some models also offer a backlit display, which is certainly an advantage.

2. Brand

The two most well-known e-book reader brands are Amazon Kindle and PocketBook. Besides these, there are also less well-known brands. It is always important to consider other parameters, not just the brand.

3. Price

Prices range from approximately 90 euros for the cheapest devices up to several hundred euros. The best-selling readers cost around 150 to 250 euros and provide most of the essential features.

4. Supported Formats

E-books come in various formats, most commonly PDF, MOBI, EPUB, DOC, or TTS. Some readers do not support all these formats. There are also applications and programs for format conversion, which make working with the reader easier.

5. Language

The interface of some reader models is available only in English, for example, Amazon Kindle. This does not mean you cannot read a book in Slovak or Czech. Slovak and Czech characters are supported by all readers sold in Slovakia. If you do not know a foreign language, it is better to choose a reader with a menu in Czech.

6. Memory

Memory capacity usually ranges from 4 to 8 GB. Since e-book files are not large, this size is sufficient. If needed, some models offer the possibility of expanding capacity with a memory card.

7. Controls

Most e-book readers are controlled via a touchscreen, which also offers multiple functions. Some models can be operated using buttons.

8. Connectivity Options

To make working with the reader easier, you can use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connections. They allow you to download or send e-books directly to the device. Cheaper models may not support these connections.

9. Special Features

Some readers offer a dictionary function. You can highlight a word in the text, and it will be immediately translated into another language. You can also create notes that you can return to later.
