Do you want to know the time while also tracking basic indicators of your health and physical activity? In addition to smartwatches, you can use fitness bands, which in some ways are similar to smartwatches but differ in many other aspects.
Intelligent bands can be connected to your smartphone just like smartwatches via Bluetooth. You can also pair them with an app on your phone, where you can keep track of all important data. Fitness bands are compatible with both Android and iOS operating systems. Their primary functions include step counting, heart rate monitoring, and displaying simple notifications from your phone. You can also choose based on brand, for example, Samsung fitness bands, Huawei fitness bands, or the popular Xiaomi fitness bands.
Main Differences Between Fitness Bands and Smartwatches
Design – Smartwatches resemble traditional watches more closely because they have a round or square display. A fitness band is usually narrow with a small, thin display. It is much lighter and made from more affordable materials such as silicone, rubber, or plastic. Most manufacturers also offer the option to replace the bands.
Price – Fitness bands are cheaper compared to smartwatches. While smartwatches can cost hundreds of euros, fitness bands are available for just a few dozen euros.
Battery Life – One of the biggest advantages of fitness bands is their battery life. Some manufacturers claim a battery life of several weeks. On average, a fully charged battery lasts about one to two weeks. Most smartwatches need to be charged daily or at most every 2–3 days.
Functions – In this category, smartwatches usually have the edge, offering a wide range of functions. Fitness bands typically have only the basics, such as a pedometer, motion sensor, sports activity tracking, heart rate monitoring, alarm, music playback, and notifications for messages and calls. Higher-end models, of course, offer more features, such as a fitness band with GPS.
Why Choose a Fitness Band Instead of a Smartwatch?
Smartwatches can be unnecessarily advanced for many people. If you do not plan to use all the features they offer, a fitness band will be sufficient. It becomes an ideal choice if you want to know the time, track your daily steps, and monitor whether your heart rate is elevated. Operating such a band is very simple and can be done by anyone. You can even buy one for your parents or grandparents so they can keep track of their activities, and the band will vibrate when someone calls or sends a message.
Thanks to their lighter weight, fitness bands are very comfortable to wear, and you often forget you have them on your wrist. The display is smaller compared to smartwatches, reducing the risk of breakage or other damage. Most fitness bands are also dust- and water-resistant, so you don’t need to remove them even if you go for a swim.
Higher-end fitness bands additionally offer tracking of various sports activities, sleep quality and stress monitoring, or even blood oxygen saturation. Some even support NFC, which is useful if you want to make payments with your band. However, you should always check whether your bank supports this feature.
If you are deciding between a fitness band and a smartwatch, consider primarily what you need it for. If you value advanced features and a more luxurious appearance, choose a smartwatch. If long battery life, lower price, and basic functions are more important, a fitness band will not disappoint you.
